Last Summer I went to Connemara, Ireland to film a documentary with my boyfriend Brent. Connemara is the rugged and beautiful western-most region of Ireland in County Galway. We had an unique opportunity to film the very traditional dancing, Gaelic singing and storytelling, as our friend Danny O'Flahery, an Irish balladeer and historian was able to put together some stellar nights of entertainment in his hometown of Carna. We also filmed a boat race and interviewed horse owners and people at the Ballyconneely pony show.
I had photos of my great-grandmother's birth cottage in nearby Aillebrack, and I thought I would try to locate it and see if it was still there. Little by little in our interviews we found locals who knew the cottage, and then said there was still a relative living in the cottage. It was a magical afternoon as a local took us to a small driveway and there was my relative--he and his son-in-law had been stacking the bricks of peat moss for the winter. They were very hospitable and during our visit I sang him a verse of "Bridget O'Malley" a haunting folk song--and the name of my great grandmother.
We are in the editing process of the documentary now and we'll keep you posted. It was an wonderful trip and opportunity to be deep in the traditions of Connemara.
